So…? So that…?

Sometimes they are the same (or similar) word in English but they are totally different when trying to express in Thai. Let’s look at this example:

ก็เลย vs. จะได้

kôr loei vs. jà dâi

ก็เลย//kôr loei

Sentence 1, Sentence 2

(ก็เลย is usually incorporated in Sentence 2, behind the subject).

Sentence 2 happens as a result of Sentence 1. (Sentence 1 happens, therefore sentence 2 happens.) Here are examples:

Chăn hěw chăn kôr loei kin khaâo

I am hungry, therefore (or that’s why) I eat.

น้องไม่สบาย แม่ก็เลยพาไปหาหมอ

Nórng mâi sàbaai mâe kôr loei phaa (nórng) pai hăh mŏr

My younger brother (or sister) is ill, therefore (or as a result/that’s why) mom brings him (or her) to see a doctor.

จะได้//jà dâi

Sentence 1, Sentence 2

(จะได้ is usually incorporated in Sentence 2, after the subject).

The clue here is “จะ” which signifies a future tense. Sentence 2 will happen in the future if Sentence 1 has been completed. The examples are:

Mŏr bòrk nórng wâh tôrng kin yaa láew kôr norn phák, jà dâi haăi rehw rehw.

Doctor told my younger brother (or sister) that he (or she) had to eat medicine and have a good rest, so that he (or she) would get better soon.

Dèk dèk khuan tâng jai rian, toh khêun jà dâi mee ngaan dee dee tham
