Words with ใ- (1) ใหญ่//yài

As I mentioned in the class, I do not encourage memorizing nor will I provide a list of words using ใ- to students. Your job is to slowly learn, read more, and finally instill these words into your heart. This entry is the first in the ใ- series. There will be 20 words explained and dissected so that it is easier for you to visualize.



Seûa tua née yài kern pai

This shirt is too big.


Kâew bai yài

A big glass


Năng sěu lêm yài

A big book

ผู้ใหญ่//phôo yài – Adult, elderly, senior (in terms of age or rank)

หน้าใหญ่//nâh yài – Generous, willing to spend (unnecessarily)

พี่ใหญ่//phêe yài – ‘Big brother’

ใหญ่//yài vs. โต//toh


  • It means big, large.
  • Most of the times it is used with a classifier of the noun it describes.


  • It is more informal than ใหญ่
  • It can also be used as a verb = to grow up, or an adjective = grown
  • It can be used with or without a classifier.


Lôok chaai khŏrng ther toh wai jang

Your son has grown up so quickly.


Toh khêun nŏo yàhk pen mŏr khâ

When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.


Lôok saăo khon toh

The eldest daughter

ตัวใหญ่, ตัวโต, คนตัวใหญ่, คนตัวโต

High ranking person

Other usage:

หิวใช่มั้ย กินใหญ่เลย

Hěw châi mái, kin yài loei

You are hungry, aren’t you? You keep eating.

ดีใจล่ะสิ ยิ้มใหญ่เลย

Dee jai lâ sì, yím yài loei

You must be happy/glad. You keep smiling.
