Words with ใ- (7) ใจ//jai

ใจ//jai can mean heart, mind, spirit. Extracted from The Heart Book (Christopher G. Moore), Thai language does not ignore the intellect (part of the discussion on “heart”), but the emphasis is on the emotive way of seeing and feeling. […] Thais are rarely at a loss for an exact heart phrase to express a feeling or idea.

According to Moore, there are more than 800 expressions with ใจ//jai. I don’t really suggest anyone to try to memorize all these, too many! It may be more useful to think of some situations that are related to the expressions.

Here are some of the examples:

ใจดี//jai dee – kind


Khun pâh jai dee khâang bâhn ráb líang lôok mǎh lôok maew thòok thíng

A kind (lit. good heart) lady (older than mom) who lives next door takes care of abandoned puppies and kittens.

ใจเย็น//jai yen – calm, relaxed


Nórng saǎo tham ngaan fĕe meu dâi dee phrór pen khon jai yen

Younger sister can do handicraft well as she is calm (lit. cool heart).

ใจร้าย//jai raái – mean


Mâe líang jai raái chái Cinderella tham khwaam sà-àad bâhn

The mean (lit. evil heart) stepmother got Cinderella to do housework.

ดีใจ//dee jai – glad, pleased

คุณแม่ดีใจที่ลูกชายคนเล็กสอบได้ที่ ๑

Khun mâe dee jai thêe lôok chaai khon lék sòrb dâi thêe nèung

Mother is pleased (lit. heart is good) that her younger son gets first place in his school exam.

ชอบใจ//chôrb jai – delighted, elated

*This is used in a more casual context.


Nórng chaai chôrb jai thêe khun phôr khun mâe phaa pai thiâo sǔan sànùk

Younger brother is elated (lit. like (verb) the heart) that his parents are bringing him to the amusement park.

มีใจ//mee jai – to like (someone)

เธอทำดีกับเขา เขาก็เลยคิดว่าเธอมีใจ

Ther tham dee kàb khǎo, khǎo kôr loei khíd wâh ther mee jai

She treats him well; as a result, he thinks that she likes him (lit. have a heart).

ทำใจ//tham jai – to condition/to prepare the heart (for the bad news)

เขาเพิ่งรู้ว่าคนที่เขาชอบมีแฟนแล้ว เขาก็เลยต้องทำใจ

Khǎo phêrng róo wâh khon thêe khăo chôrb mee faen láew khǎo kôr loei tôrng tham jai

He just knew that the person he liked already has a partner; as a result, he had to admit that fact (lit. make a heart).
