**Simplified version**
***This is targeted at basic user of Thai language.***
In general, it means “new”:
ปีใหม่//pee mài : new year
เสื้อใหม่//seua mài : new top
บ้านใหม่//baan mài : new house
แก้วใหม่//kaew mài : new glass
There is a distinctive difference when you include the noun’s classifier in front of ใหม่//mài. In this case, it doesn’t only means ‘new’ but also ‘another’ one.
เสื้อตัวใหม่//seûa tua mài : another shirt
เสื้อใหม่// seûa mài : new shirt; a shirt that is new
พี่สาวของฉันซื้อเสื้อผ้าเป็นประจำ ถ้าพี่เบื่อเสื้อพวกนี้พี่ก็จะยกให้ฉัน = ฉันได้เสื้อตัวใหม่จากพี่ = ใหม่ของฉัน เก่าของพี่
Phêe saăo khŏrng chăn séu seûa phâa pen pràjam; thâa phêe beùa seûa phuâk née, phêe kôr jà yók hâi chăn = Chăn dâi seûa tua mài jàhk phêe = Mài khŏrng chăn, kào khŏrng phêe
My elder sister buys clothes regularly. If she is sick of these clothes, she would give them to me. = I get ‘new’ clothes from her. = New for me but old for her.
บ้านหลังใหม่//bâhn lǎng mài : another house
บ้านใหม่//bâhn mài : new house; a house that is new
บ้านที่พ่อกับแม่ของฉันอยู่มีอายุมากแล้ว ฉันก็เลยอยากซื้อบ้านหลังใหม่ให้พวกท่าน
Bâhn thêe phôr kàb mâe khŏrng chăn yòo mee ahyú mâak láew; chăn kôr loei yàhk séu bâhn lăng mài hâi phûak thâan
The house in which my parents live is very old, therefore I want to buy another house for them.
แก้วใบใหม่//kâew bai mài : another glass
แก้วใหม่//kâew mài : new glass; a glass that is new
ยกเว้น
แฟนคนใหม่//faen khon mài : another girlfriend/boyfriend
แฟนใหม่//faen mài : new girlfriend/boyfriend
The opposite is always true:
เสื้อตัวเก่า//seûa tua kào : previous shirt
เสื้อเก่า//seûa kào : old shirt (torn, tattered; a shirt that is old)
บ้านหลังเก่า//bâhn lăng kào : previous house
บ้านเก่า//bâhn kào : old house (a house that is old)
แก้วใบเก่า//kâew bai kào : previous glass
แก้วเก่า//kâew kào : old glass (a glass that is old)
Now, if we combine ใหม่//mài with the action, what will we have?
Action + mài = Do the action again
เขียนใหม่//Khǐan mài
Write again
เขียนแบบนี้ไม่สวยเลย เขียนใหม่ค่ะ
Khǐan bàeb née mâi suǎi loei, khǐan mài khâ
Writing like this is not beautiful/neat at all, write it again please.
พูดใหม่//phôod mài
Speak again
ฉันอธิบายให้เธอฟังแล้วไม่เข้าใจเหรอ งั้นพูดใหม่นะ
Chǎn àthíbaai hâi ther fang láew mâi khâo jai rěr, ngán phôod mài ná
I already explained it to you but you don’t understand? In that case, I’ll say it again.
In order to request for someone to repeat the action, you can use:
ทำใหม่//Tham mài
Do it again
เอาใหม่//Ao mài
